Ratapan: Catholic Ritual Mourning in Insana, Timor.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard a more beautiful female choral arrangement. There is something so ancient about this melody, as though melody almost doesn’t exist. I often think of a melody line as an ego, as the mind thread of one conciousness expressed in a linear story line and familier pattern. This feels totally void of ego. There is little linear narrative it seems, which feels far more of a collective expression rather than one story shared from one perspective. Appropriate of course as it is a ritual song of collective mourning. Truly beguiling.
